Did You Know?
HATTIE MCDANIEL was the first black
woman to sing on the radio in America and the FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN TO
WIN AN ACADEMY AWARD for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in
‘Gone With The Wind’, in 1940. She was not allowed to attend the
premiere of the film in Atlanta. When she won the Oscar in 1940, she
was allowed to attend the ceremony…and was seated in a segregated
section.
