Did you know that candy corn was invented in the 1880s by George Renninger of the Wunderlee Candy Company and was sold as "penny candy" all year round, but it didn't really take off until it was marketed as "Chicken Feed" by the company that is now the Jelly Belly Candy Company in 1898? It's been around that long! And love it or hate it, it's become a Halloween staple ever since.
Did you know that trick-or-treating has been around in one form or another since the mid-1800s but that the tradition as we know it didn't really take off until sugar rationing ended after World War II? A Peanuts comic depicting kids dressing up and going door to door firmly established the tradition in 1951 with Charlie Brown saying "Tricks or treats... money or eats!" A 1952 Disney cartoon "Trick or Treat" with Donald Duck and his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie trick-or-treating helped further the tradition as we know it today.
